Is it possible to use custom metrics in Google Analytics? If so, how do I do it?

Yes, Google Analytics has a feature for that. There are some limits to custom dimensions, but they can definitely be very helpful. There are four stages of the lifecycle of a custom dimension - configuration, collection, processing and reporting.
