What are common mistakes made when tracking emails with UTM?

Hey. I am starting to use UTM parameters to track email campaigns, however I am not sure if I am using the parameters effectively. This is because since I have started using the UTM parameters, I have noticed that the emails sent are not being opened. Does anyone know of common mistakes made when building UTM parameters to track email campaigns that I could consider to see where I am going wrong? Thanks in advance.

Without UTMs in your email marketing campaigns, you won't really know their effectiveness like open rates and click rates. Here are some of the mistakes made when tracking emails with UTM:

  1. Not using the same campaign name across channels
  2. Not using UTMs
  3. Inconsistent naming, spelling, and capitalization
  4. Mixing up UTM parameters i.e. source and medium
  5. Not using UTMs to track sales and ROI
  6. Using UTMs for internal links
