How successful are free samples?

I would think that free samples are the way to go, but I noticed that some say that they are bad. What are the disadvantages of using free product samples?

Free product samples are an exceptionally useful tool in not only giving people something for free, which everyone everywhere loves, but also giving people a sample of the actual product to see if it is worth their money. Free samples are an effective psychological trick to use on people. As for the disadvantages, the most obvious is that you need to manufacture a product for which you will receive no payment, which hurts your bottom line in the short term.
