Can upsells be optimized?

I was told that upsells would help me with increasing sales... but I haven't really seen any positive changes. I don't want to give up though! Can anyone suggest ways to optimize them to make people actually buy those additional products? Perhaps some marketing techniques or upselling strategies anyone can suggest?

Here are some of the ways that you can use to optimize your upsells.
- consider different wording, put a message that will instantly draw the customer and remember whitespace don't put a big block sentence that will confuse or bore the customer.
- consider where you place your upsell because it really matters , on the product page and the cart page is the most effective.
