I see lots of businesses use flyer distribution as a method to reach broader audiences, by handing them out in busy places like the mall. Is it a cost-effective strategy considering all of the printing and paper expenses?

It depends. Are you trying to raise brand awareness or drive sales? It's likely that not everyone in the mall is going to be your ideal customer, so flyers are probably better for creating simple awareness. The average printing cost for a flyer is about 70 cents, but you could get a lower rate by printing in bulk.
